“Ganga” – not just a river but an eternal mother whose motherliness has evolved civilizations, whose fertility fed billions, whose dazzle enlightened greatest of all souls, whose beauty attracted travellers from all around and whose firmness calmed wildest of all hearts. Varanasi, Shiva’s own city takes the privilege to honour the mother and acknowledge her significance in the form of “Ganga Mahotsav”.

Ganga Mahostav 2019

Ganga Mahotsav is a 3-4-day grand celebration celebrated on the ghats of Ganga in Varanasi. This grandiose festival begins with Dev prabhodini ekadashi and concludes with awe-inspiring Dev Deepawali in Kartik Purnima. This year it will be celebrated from 8th – 11th Nov at Rajghat and will conclude on 12th Nov with Dev Deepawali. Ganga Mahotsav starts at dusk and is adorned with blends of Classical Music, folk songs, Bollywood melodies, dance etc.

Doyens from the world of art and culture assemble to cherish and praise Mother Ganga through their performances. A floating stage is prepared on the river which is beautifully decorated with colourful flowers and shimmering lights. The number of audience crosses thousands which include both locals and travellers. This indeed is a celestial experience and takes one’s soul to a heavenly abode.

Ganga Mahotsav also open doors to the world of handicrafts. Artisans from all over India gather together at Urban Haat, Sanskritik Sankul, Chowkaghat in Craft Bazar and showcase their exquisite Handicrafts. In the previous version of Ganga Mahotsav, luminaries like Ustad Bismillah Khan, Ustad Zakir Hussain, Pandit Birju Maharaj, Girija Devi and many more have performed and shown their gratitude to Ganga. In this edition of Ganga Mahotsav, Pandit Bhajan Sopori, Hans Raj Hans, Tochi Raina, Pandit Vikas Maharaj, Anup Jalota etc will dazzle the evening with their outstanding talent. Many local artists and school kids will also present colourful and vivid performances. Sumptuous street food stalls will also be placed in vicinity to give a boost to your taste buds as well.
