A great Karma Yogi and an extraordinary Brahmachari, Lord Hanuman is the son of Lord Wind (Pavan) and Mata Anjana Devi, that’s why he is known as the Pavanputra. As per the religious sayings he is regarded as the supreme devotee of Lord Ram and known for his desire less devotion towards him.
One of the renowned temples in Varanasi known as the Sankat Mochan Temple. Legends say that the idol of Lord Hanuman was established here by Goswami Tulsidas Ji himself in 1608-11, who is the writer of the holy Shri Ramcharit Manas. It is believed the Tulsidas Ji had written most parts of Shri Ramcharit Manas here itself and today these manuscripts are kept securely at his residence which is at the Tulsi Ghat
Initially the appearance of this temple was not so grand but in 1900, Pt. Madan Mohan Malviya contributed to the construction and beautification of this magnificent temple.
Later for the operations and proper maintenance of the Temple, Shri Virbhadra Mishra founded the Sankat Mochan Foundation who was a Civil Engineering Professor at IIT BHU at that time. At present his son Prof. Vishambharnath Mishra is the caretaker of the temple and he is fulfilling his duties well.
Every year one of the most awaited celebrations here is the Hanuman Jayanti on the occasion of which a grand 5-7 days program is organized in which the artists from different parts of the globe come here and perform free of cost which in turn attracts thousands of viewers who become part of this celebration.
2020 Sankat Mochan Music Festival has been scheduled between 12th April 2020 to 17th April 2020, Due to COVID’19 dates are not confirmed yet.
People have their emotional sentiments attached with this place and they believe that worshipping Lord Hanuman alone could make them rid of all their problems. Probably this is why you can witness a huge crowd gathering here every Tuesday to seek the blessings of the Lord.
