Chet Singh Ghat has a very important historical significance amongst all other Ghats in Varanasi. The Ghat and the adjoining fort was built by the king of Kashi Raja Balvant Singh. Chet Sing is also known as Shivala Ghat as it is situated near Shivala area.

In the year 1781, a war was held at the fort between Warren Hastings and Chet Singh  wherein Chet Singh lost the battle, and left the fort. The fort and ghat has been taken from British by Maharaja Prabhu Narayan Singh in the latter half of 19th century after more than 100 years. After getting the possession of the fort from the british, Maharaja Prabhu Narayan Singh donated the northern part of the fort to the Naga Sadhus. King Prabhu Narayan Singh named the present ghat as Chet Sing Ghat in the name of his ancestor king Chet Singh.
