Way ahead of nobility and prosperity, the grandeur of the oldest cities of the world, Kashi originates from divine vibes of Augharh Shiva, which enthrals one while stepping on the banks of north streaming holy Ganga.
According to a legend, Divodas, the very first king of Kashi (the ancient name of Varanasi), made the city forbidden for all the Gods and Goddesses. While lord Shiva broke into the city in disguise. This incidence made Divodas realize the blunder hence he changed his mind and opened the doors of the holy city for all. This event filled Gods and Goddesses with joy and they enlightened every Ghat, alley and corner of the city with earthen lamps. According to another belief, on the very day of Kartik Purnima Lord Shiva killed the demon Tripurasura, therefore this day is also called Tripuri Purnima.
