Meer Ghat
According to legend there is a site of ‘Jarasandh Teerth’ submerged in the Ganges right in front of the Meer Ghat. It is affirmed in ‘Girwanmanjari’ that the present Meer Ghat was formerly known as ‘Jarasandh Ghat’. In the year 1735 this Ghat and the adjoining fort was built by Meer Rustam Ali, the former fauzdar (commander) of Varanasi and since this Ghat was being called as Meer Ghat. The representative of Peshwa, Sadashiv Nayak also indicated about Meer Ghat in his writing. In 1958 UP government took the responsibility to renovate the Ghat. There is an important religious significance to take bath at this Ghat in the month of Kartik. Many people take part at this religious event. The second most important temple is Bishalakhshi Devi temple which bears the beautiful Dravidian temple architecture along with its religious significance.
There are two Math (monastrery) at this place amongst which one is called Bhajanashram and the other one is for the Sikh Sadhus who follow Guru Nanak. Bhajanashram is running by the Late Ganpat Ray Khemka Trust, Kolkata where mainly the Bengali widows reside. On the other hand there is a everyday arrangement of free food and treatment for the sadhus and the beggars at the Sikh Monastery.
